"Interesting" Events

The best place to be in an earthquake (especially a highly localized "earthquake") is where you can say "Oh, what was that?" (or at the very least "Oh my Goodness! It's OK now.")

Last night, Squirrel decided to leap to the upper shelf above my monitors. That's really too high but he made it - destabilizing my left-hand monitor in the process (but I didn't realize that at the time). Then he walked back and forth, obviously not happy. It is, after all, a wire shelf. Cat feet are not meant to walk on 1"-spaced wire.

I told him to stay and went to get the stepladder to help him down. Unfortunately, when I started to leave the room, he panicked and jumped down - again onto the monitor, destabilizing it further and

* CRASH *

over went the monitor, past the edge of the desk and face down onto the folding wooden TV table I keep by my desk.

Cats, desk, Vicki, handheld PDA, telephone, and (wonder of wonders) 17" CRT monitor were all fine, although the cats were justifiably concerned (especially Squirrel) and Bebop was still looking for the monster that made the big noise an hour later. The TV table took the only damage, splitting lengthwise down the center along one "seam" Harry Homeowner checked it out to see if it can be mended (probably; it's sitting glued and clamped now) and what needs to be done to make it structurally sound again.
