Bebop and Raven were due for their annual physical exams (oil, lube, and filter) Also Bebop has a nasty sore on his lower lip. I think it's a feline acne thing that was too close to the inside of the lip and I missed seeing it earlier. Now swollen and paainful to touch. So off we went to the vetdoctor at 4 this afternoon with Bebop talking a mile a minute. MaoWoooo. BallLLOOOO. Bloooob. Every so often there was a pitiful meep from Raven.
We arrived before the previous appointment ended, so we stayed in the car (nicer than the waiting room) and I sat with one hand in each of the carrier bags, scruffling heads and murmurring endearments, consolations, and sweet nothings.
Raven weighs just over 13 pounds, up a skosh from last year. Getting his weight was a little bit difficult. There's a clothes washer in the same room (for towels and bedding) and it started a cycle just as we started to weigh Raven... who then gripped the edge of the table in his capable thumbs and said "No". But I peeled him off the table and we finally got a weight.
Back to the exam room where I held him while the vet did a flashlight thing. Then we were talking and the vet asked "Did I check his eyes?". I said "I'm pretty sure that's what you did but it could have been his ears or his mouth. I wasn't really watching. You checked something." So the Doc said "Well, I can do it again'. And off with the lights, on with the little flashlight and Raven said "Haaatth" which I interpreted to mean "you DID that already!". So. We'd done that already.
Then the rest of the exam healthy kitty, tartar on two teeth, ... scrape... that... off! (without getting bitten), a couple of shots and done. And, said Raven, not a moment too soon.
Can we go home now?
Not quite yet. We have to do Bebop now.
Bebop weighs a little under 17 pounds, about the same as last year and is otherwise healthy except for the nasty sore on his lower lip. I feel really awful that I didn't catch that when it was smaller.
Bebop's eye check was interesting. I realized that I could see the reflection of each eye in turn (and nothing else) in the glass of a painting on the way. Most nifty. Bebop wasn't impressed but I thought it was cool.
Bebop didn't get his annual vaccinations this time. Instead, he got antibiotics and a followup appointment next Friday. He'll get the vaccinations then.
Also, the vetdoctor ground down the point on Bebop's upper right canine tooth (why are they called canines?) to keep it from puncturing the swollen sore area. (Which it had clearly been doing. Ouch!)
That was interesting. There was me, our favorite vet tech, and our vetdoctor, all holding a squirming almost-17 pound male Maine Coon who very much wanted to be Some Place Else while said Maine Coon tried his best to hiss, growl, and complain most vehemently as the vetdoctor buffed the point on his fang with a Dremel Mototool. Well, at least when Bebop was hollering his mouth was open.
On the way home, Bebop told me in great detail how he felt about everything that had happened over the past hour. Raven was very quiet.
Apparently I've been forgiven by now.
