Biiiiig Mouse!

Dusky-Footed Woodrat

I took a late afternoon nap with the cats today. When I woke up, Squirrel was on the window ledge (behind the curtains) making little happy noises and pawing at the window.

I went and looked and there was a woodrat at the feeder, eating sunflower seed. They come out at dusk or later.

I knew we had them around here but I haven't "caught" one at the feeder before this (although I've heard them on the sunroom roof and one night saw some with the flashlight). They're big, 5 or 6 inches (not counting the tail), smaller than a squirrel but bigger than a chipmunk, with huge ears.

Squirrel was ecstatic. He was pawing at the window, purring, hunkering down to watch, tail swishing side to side. He kept coming back to me, then going back into the corner and pawing the window again. He's gotten a little blase about the squirrels at the feeder but this was really getting to him. :-)
