The Mouse is Where?!

Raven was very interested in the bird feeder on the back porch this morning. I didn't see anything — no squirrels or pigeons — and didn't understand his interest... until I started to go out to fill the feeder. There was a mouse (actually a woodrat)... in the feeder. Not next to, not behind. Inside.

Hello mousiekins, are you OK? How did you get in there?

I carefully lifted the semi-birdiable enclosure...

I carefully popped the top of the bird feeder... and stood back.

His mousieness looked up at me with one beady eye, then teleported out of the birdfeeder (how, exactly, did he get out of the bird feeder? He seems to have flowed through a space that does not appear large enough to flow through...) and raced down the stairs to safety behind the fence along the retaining wall (so that's where they live).

I refilled the feeder with seed and went back inside.

Now I know why I've been finding empty sunflower seed husks on the inside of the feeder. I couldn't understand why anything would be chucking the husks back over the side. They aren't. They're eating the seeds from the inside. Pretty smart these wee furry beasties!
