We decided to get industrious and repair the carpet on one of Squirrel's favorite scratching spots — the outside vertical post of the kitchen cat tree. We stopped by a carpet shop after breakfast and got a couple of (free) sample pieces. Squirrel approved our selection by doing a good claw workout on the pieces when we laid them on the kitchen table.
I removed the shredded carpet from the post while Bebop lay on the cat tree platform above me, in a textbook "Kilroy" position, peering over the edge to supervise. Then Rich measured and cut a new piece of carpet. (We had gotten two pieces which turned out to be a good thing. We were able to tug the lower one out from under Squirrel , who had decided to lie on them after sharpening his nails.)
Rich attached the new carpet with two kinds of staples — half-inch staple gun staples and longer pound-in staples. The result is quite professional. Squirrel and Raven both gave their approval.
The new carpet is a different color (sorta greenish) but it blends in well with the speckledy beige of the cat treel... and it will become less different over time as it's slowly covered in bits of fluff. :-)
